N2 - Welsh is described as having two series of nasals, a voiced series [m, n, n], and a voiceless series, transcribed as [m, n, n)] or [mh, nh, r)h]. In this paper, I give a synchronic analysis of the nasals and argue that the second series are phonologically sequences of a nasal followed by [h], I.e. [mh, nh, nh]. Moreover, I show that the properties and distribution of these consonants all follow from this assumption. The argument for the analysis comes from: phonetics, the distribution of the mutation system, syllabification, the distribution of [h], poetry, and dialect data.
