Abstract

In patients with intractable aspiration it is often necessary to separate the upper airway from the lower tracheobronchial structures. It is possible to achieve voice restoration after laryngotracheal separation by creating a shunt between the distal posterior tracheal stoma wall and the proximal laryngotracheal segment. This physiological approach differs from alaryngeal tracheo-esophageal puncture techniques in that voice is generated from a structurally intact residual larynx.
