Abstract

We show that atoms moving inside cavities experience a velocity-dependent spontaneous emission rate caused by the Doppler shifting of the atomic transition frequency on or off the cavity resonance. This is in contrast to the free space situation, where galilean invariance guarantees that this rate is independent of velocity for atoms in uniform motion.
