Abstract
The lifetime and dynamics of vortices in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of dilute atomic vapor can shed light on the superfluid character of BEC in alkalis. An overview is given on the various efforts at preparing such vortices. Focus is on an alternative method of vortex detection which should be less sensitive to deformation of the vortex line.
