Abstract
A nondestructive method of vortex detection was described and was used to characterize the tilt modes of a bare vortex in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Control over the tilt of a vortex was demonstrated, including the suppression of tilting altogether. The suppression of tilting, which maintains the visibility of vortices out to long times, permits the study of the lifetime of vortices at finite temperature.
