Abstract
In this talk I give a short non-technical review of various ways in which the apparent unification of gauge couplings within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model can be understood within string theory. Special emphasis will be placed on recent developments concerning string GUT models. This talk is a highly condensed version of a recent review article (Ref. [1]), which in turn is partially based on work done in collaboration with A. Faraggi and J. March-Russell.
