Abstract
The paper investigates a simple inhomogeneous model for the Jovian clouds. This model consists of an upper cloud layer, having a transmission approximately equal to 0. 5 for vertically incident radiation, and a lower semi-infinite cloud separated by a clear space. The upper cloud layer is composed of NH//3 ice while the lower cloud is an NH//4HS cloud overlying an H//2O ice cloud. A satisfactory fit to the measured equivalent widths of the H//2 quadrupole lines is obtained with approximately equal to 15 km amagat (am) H//2 above the upper cloud and approximately equal to 50 km am in the clear space below if the diffuse transmission of the upper cloud approximately equal to 0. 5.
