Abstract

The design of linear, minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizers for two-dimensional intersymbol-interference (ISI) channels is considered. Signal models are developed and filter design is conducted for various operating environments associated with particular implementations of page-oriented optical memories (POMs). Specifically, we consider optically incoherent and coherent systems dominated by either thermal or shot noise. It is demonstrated how these simple ISI mitigation algorithms may be used to improve the storage density and hence memory capacity.
