Abstract

The advantage of two-dimensional (2-D) charge-transfer (CT) chromophore in a poled polymeric system over 1-D CT ones is theoretically demonstrated in terms of photonic device applications. Poling behavior of second harmonic generation coefficient and linear polarizability tensor components are calculated for carbazole derivatives with 2-D and 1-D CT character. It is shown that, in a 2-D CT compound, the off-diagonal components present 1.5 times as large value as those in a 1-D CT compounds. In addition, the 2-D CT compound presents less anisotropy in refractive index than the 1-D CT compound, and thus smaller change in it with orientation relaxation.
