note = "Funding Information: The STAR SRP is an intensive six-week program for STAR I and STAR II students to begin or continue their research experience during the summer. This component, together with the academic year research program, makes it possible for STAR students to conduct research for two full years before college entry. In addition to conducting their own research, STAR II SRP students serve as mentors to STAR I SRP students; and both STAR I and STAR II students serve as mentors to MES during our MES summer science program. Because the majority of STAR students fall below the poverty line, the SRP provides financial support to participants. In 2004, eight STAR II and nine STAR I students conducted research as part of the SRP. The STAR SRP is generously funded by the Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation and the USC Neighborhood Outreach Program. Funding Information: S&E outreach efforts described herein were supported by the National Science Foundation, the University of Southern California (USC) Biomimetic MicroElectronic Systems Engineering Research Center, the Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation, the Confidence Foundation, and the USC Good Neighbor Program. The authors gratefully acknowledge Eve Rinehart for contributions to generations of this report and Kathleen O{\textquoteright}Neill for contributions to the STAR Program.",
