Abstract
The transmission of light through small elliptical apertures in a thin silver film at λ=1.0 μm was analyzed. Both cases of incident polarization parallel and perpendicular to the major axis of the ellipse were considered. The transmission efficiency ,η, was found to be low for parallel polarization and high for perpendicular polarization. It was also found that for the elliptical hole under low transmission conditions, η dropped rapidly with an increasing film thickness.
