Abstract
The pediatric nurse practitioner has an expanded and significantly more meaningful role than the pediatric office nurse. Pediatric nurse practitioners in the offices of pediatricians spend twice as much time as other nurses (47 per cent versus 24 per cent) in the company of patients. Most (60 per cent) of the nurse practitioner's time with patients is spent in taking histories, performing physical examinations, evaluating health problems, and counseling with parents, while the office nurse spends only 11 per cent of her time with patients and is otherwise occupied mainly with purely routine, procedural, and technical activities.
