Abstract

The adaptive Eulerian-Lagrangian finite element method of Neuman’ is improved and extended to three-dimensional domains. Accurate results are obtained for the entire range of Peclet numbers from very small to infinity and Courant numbers at least up to 15. Difficulties resolved include oscillations, numerical smearing, the clipping of peaks. and grid orientation effects.
