Abstract
The goal of the present study was to investigate how the process of vascular adaptation can ensure that the flow is well distributed among flow pathways through the network, even though the pressure gradient is higher in shorter pathways. A previously developed theoretical model was used to simulate the effect of the metabolic response on flow distribution in a simple hypothetical network with two long flow pathways and one shorter pathway between the inflow and the outflow. The metabolic response represents the tendency of a slowly flowing, poorly oxygenated segment to increase its diameter.
