Abstract

Kory Floyd has spent his more than two-decade research career investigating the importance of affectionate communication in human relationships. In this essay, he summarizes some of the Affection Exchange Theory research showing that frequency of affectionate communication is positively associated with relationship satisfaction, communication satisfaction, relationship stability, love, closeness, commitment, and (in sexual relationships) sexual satisfaction.
