Abstract
The debris that has accumulated in the Ventana Cave provides insights into the changing pattern of life in this part of Arizona over the last 10 000 years. In so varied and unpredictable an environment, no single life form can outcompete others all the time. During extended droughts, the slow-growing, conservative cacti and succulents can endure stress that kills trees and prevents annuals from germinating. -J.Sheail
