The role of the saturable absorber in a mode-locked fiber laser

Abstract

We experimentally investigated the role of the saturable absorber (SA) in a mode-locked fiber laser. It is shown that the modulation depth of the SA significantly affects the pulse duration at the laser output for a given cavity design (mainly cavity dispersion and nonlinearity).
