Abstract
We demonstrate through computer simulation that power partitioning due to linear diffraction can play a crucial role in the break up of high intensity apertured beams propagating in air. By investigating the way linear diffraction partitions power in these beams, we are able to predict the positions and relative powers of supercritical hot spots.
