The problem of 'progress'

Abstract

"Close to Eden" is Nikita Mikhalkov's film of the nomadic world's last stand. It depicts the Mongol's Edenic life that is threatened by the encroachment of Western "civilization" ironically in the form of Chinese industrial development, forcing the Mongols to yield to a more "progressive" use of the land. The director's concern is the violence of this process, particularly to the human spirit as well as to cultural diversity.
