Abstract

This chapter briefly retraces the history of French in applied linguistics through key pioneer figures and significant dates such as the foundation of AILA in 1963. Applied linguistics is broadly defined as an inter-disciplinary field of research concerned with practical issues related to language and communication. Although its two main areas of research have been language education and foreign/ second language acquisition, it covers a much wider range of linguistic issues. This chapter also summarizes the main findings and directions for future research presented in the chapters that comprise Part II and III.
