Abstract

A study of the microstructure of two types of graphite fibers GY70, a polyacrylotrinitrile (PAN) based fiber and UC4104B a pitch based fiber, is reported. These high modulus fibers were modified by intercalation with the donors K, Rb, Cs and the acceptors FeCl3, AlCl3. Several experimental techniques were used, to elucidate the effects of intercalation on the microstructure of the graphite fibers. These include scanning and transmission electron microscopy and small and wide angle X-ray diffraction.
