Abstract

Research in gynecologic oncology has been increasingly emphasized over the last decade. The formal training within this subspecialty has expanded to include quality research, both clinical and laboratory science, as an integral part. There have also been recent major advances in the laboratory and clinical based understanding of the genetics, biology, and treatment of gynecologic cancers. Despite the fiscal constraints of the 1990s that have impacted the ability of the clinician scientist to balance the responsibilities of research, teaching, and patient care, there are ongoing attempts to improve the research environment for physician scientists in this field.
