Abstract
It is demonstrated that the distribution of elements in the solar system may be connected with solar magnetic fields. Relative diffusion of neutral particles and ions in a magnetic field ("ambipolar diffusion") separates elements of different ionization potential. A simple model of the origin of the solar system which takes account of ambipolar diffusion succesfully predicts relative terrestrial abundances of the noble gases Ne, A, Kr, and Xe.
