Abstract

We present an overview of work on the merging cluster system 130657-56, commonly known as the "bullet" cluster. This system is one of only two known supersonic cluster mergers, and its unique properties enable fundamental constraints on the nature of dark matter. In a series of papers our group has used this system to demonstrate the existence of dark matter and place upper limits on the dark matter self-interaction cross section. In this proceedings we summarize these findings and discuss ongoing work to improve these constraints and quantify the impact of a supersonic merger on cluster galaxy evolution.
