Abstract
The beam propagation method (BPM) for simulating the propagation of a coherent beam of light through dielectric waveguide was discussed. The beam in BPM travels for a short distance in a homogeneous, isotropic medium, which has the average refractive index of the guide but lacks the guide's features. It was found that the mask must adjust the beam's amplitude distribution to simulate the effects of absorbing or amplifying regions.
