Abstract
Different methods for assessing insomnia are evaluated. The methods discussed include sleep questionnaires, daily sleep diaries, observers at home and in institutional settings, motility, awakening thresholds, polysomnography, and mood and performance measures taken the next day. Both theoretical issues and practical concerns related to the assessment of insomnia are discussed.
