Abstract

We installed a 2.3 cm radius beam pipe with a three-layer drift chamber around it at the CLEO interaction region of the Cornell electron storage ring to study feasibility of various future vertex detectors for CLEO II. We ran the chamber inside the CLEO detector in order to evaluate synchrotron radiation and beam gas backgrounds produced in the CLEO detector using such a small radius pipe. We also evaluated temperature stability and wire currents in this chamber to see if the environment around the pipe would be suitable for a high-resolution vertex detector.
