N2 - This paper presents a terahertz (THz) metasurface structure which may be promising for sensing and characterizing live cells. The metasurface consists of periodic hole arrays with a pair of narrow tips as electrodes. Simulation results show a bandpass resonant transmission at 0.49 THz for free-standing case. The influence of substrate and the device sensitivity are investigated. Fields are largely concentrated near the metallic probe tips, therefore increases the coupling of incident THz radiation with examined biological samples. The design is aimed to develop a lab-on-a-chip device to sense and characterize live cells.
