Abstract

The Raman enhancement of pyridine on silver in ultrahigh vacuum requires surface roughness on the 10**2 - 10**4 A scale, extends beyond the first adsorbed monolayer, and is relatively independent of chemical factors. A series of molecules (benzene, pyridine, and cyclohexane) and bonding states of a single molecule (pyridine) show equivalent enhancement. The multistage chemisorption of pyridine on Ag with co-adsorbed iodine is observed by Raman scattering.
