Abstract

Soil surface charge exerts strong control over the adsorption of ions from the soil solution, colloidal stability and particle aggregation, and rates of mineral dissolution. There are multiple methods for quantifying surface charge including proton titrations and measurements of surface excess of charged ions. These methods can be used to determine the pH values where one or more components of surface charge vanishes (i.e., points of zero charge).
