Substance abuse problems of minority populations often differ significantly from those of the general population. This article reviews the epidemiology of substance abuse within these ethnic groups and offers suggestions for focusing efforts in screening diagnosis and early intervention. Because patients' individual problems may still vary greatly within these ethnic groups, however, a model for sociocultural assessment is presented that can assist in identifying and meeting the particular treatment needs of individual patients.
