Abstract
The stability of β-VOPO4 and (VO)2P2O7 under conditions of n-butane and 1-butene oxidation was investigated using the complementary techniques of in situ laser Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Both β-VOPO4 and (VO)2P2O7 demonstrated bulk structural integrity during n-butane oxidation. The relatively greater reducing capacity of 1-butene, however, induced a transformation of β-VOPO4 to (VO)2P2O7. The presence of V(V) and V(IV) in used β-VOPO4 and (VO)2P2O7 was detected by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for both hydrocarbon oxidation conditions.
