title = "Spinal cord injuries require special care",
abstract = "Patients with acute spinal cord injury need one-on-one monitoring and are at risk for spinal shock, neurogenic shock, and respiratory impairment. Make sure patients are adequately resuscitated. Assess progression of neurologic deficits to determine if the patient's condition is worsening. To prevent skin breakdown in young, elderly, or burn spine-injured patients, remove patients from backboards as quickly as possible.",
