N2 - The goal of this paper is to give a survey of spectrum shaping codes used for digital recording systems. This class of codes belongs to the broader class of modulation codes, which are widely used in recording systems for adjusting the source characteristics to the characteristics of the recording channel. Shannon noiseless capacities of recording channels will be considered, as well as the spectra of maxentropic sequences of M-ary recording constraints. In addition, some practical encoding and decoding schemes will be discussed.
