Abstract
A temporal master equation (ME) is derived. The ME is sensitive to the location of both the linear and nonlinear elements within the cavity. Using this ME, a full spatio-temporal master equation is obtained for ring and folded optical cavities, which is exact in the linear limit. This ME also fully reproduces the Kuizenga-Siegman theory for actively mode-locked lasers, and including all the spatial modes, making it useful in connection with start-up and noise properties.
