Abstract
In this column, Masud Mansuripur describes, in simple and direct form, the details of a well known optical phenomenon. The purpose is to provide some of the subtle characteristics of the physics behind the effect, without a lot of extraneous mathematics. This article, and similar ones to be published in the future, will help those working in applied optics to gain a better appreciation of the details and physics behind various well known phenomena.
