Abstract
A simple solution of the ideal quadrupole lens problem is proposed. The lens consists of an arbitrary number of electrodes or poles field at suitably chosen potentials. A system of M electrodes possessing two mutually perpendicular planes of symmetry has only (M plus 2)-nd, (2M minus 2)-nd and higher multipole components. As a special case a 12-electrode concave cylindrical system is proposed which can also be used as a combined quadrupole-octopole-dodecapole element.
