Abstract
Laser Raman microprobe spectroscopy experiments were carried out in order to study the solution structures at and near the crystal-solution interface of a growing NaNO3 crystal. The results of the isothermal, vertical column experiments with NaNO3 supersaturated solutions show that, in the presence of a growing crystal at the bottom of the column, the concentration gradient between the top and bottom of column is maintained in which the solute concentration at the bottom of column is higher than that at the top of column. Based on these results, a model for the solution structure at and near the crystal interface of a growing crystal is presented and discussed. The relation of the model to secondary nucleation mechanisms is also discussed.
