Abstract

Bias-free bidirectional operation of a Ti:sapphire laser has been obtained through the use of a ZnS crystal as Kerr-lensing element. Two types of cavity configuration have been investigated. The Ti:sapphire crystal is located symmetrically with respect to the cavity waist. A ZnS crystal is located close to an auxiliary waist in the cavity. The circulating phase has been found to be naturally symmetric for both directions. However, there is a lock-in effect associated with the scattering of each pulse into each other at their meeting point in the ZnS crystal. This lock-in can be eliminated by either motional dithering or electro-optic dithering.
