Abstract
The specific surface area (SSA) of soil influences important processes in the subsurface, including the retention of water, the adsorption and release of plant nutrients and contaminants, particle attachment, soil swelling, and soil strength. In this chapter, we present state-of-the-art and novel techniques for direct and indirect determination of SSA together with underlying concepts and theories. Both adsorption-based methods and indirect methods such as proximal soil sensing and empirical modeling are presented. The advantages and limitations of each method are discussed with respect to the intended use of the SSA data.
