Abstract

The elderly tend to spend more time in bed, sleep less, have comparatively less deep and REM sleep, and have more shifts in sleep stages. Sleep apnea and periodic leg movements during sleep are frequent causes of insomnia, but may also be the cause of excessive daytime sleepiness. Both syndromes are especially likely to occur in the elderly.
