Signal and noise with a magnetic circular dichroism detection system in optical data storage

Abstract

A magneto-optical head with circular polarized light incident on a Co/Pt superlattice medium is studied. Differential absorption due to magnetic-circular-dichroism (MCD) is used for erasable data detection. This MCD detection system utilizes an optical isolator to minimize the feedback to the laser. The tradeoff for its reduced complexity is the loss of the common mode noise reduction capability. A disk is tested dynamically with the MCD detection system. With a linear medium velocity of 7.56 m/s and a frequency of 5 MHz a carrier-to-noise ratio of 40 dB is demonstrated.
