Abstract
Sentence-completion performance of German and Japanese Ss was compared with the performance of English and Turkish Ss under two conditions: (a) where the end of the sentence was specified in advance, and (b) where the beginning of the sentence was specified in advance. It was shown that the relative difficulty of these tasks varied as a function of the typical branching characteristics of the surface structures of sentences in these languages. It was also shown that this variation occurred only in items where the specified material did not form a major constituent of the sentence to be constructed.
