Abstract
Most experiments searching for deviations from a 1/r2 dependence of gravity over geophysical distances have been rendered inconclusive by uncertainties in the mass distribution near the sites. This problem can be avoided with an experiment designed to detect this deviation using Gauss's law. Outlining a generic setup for such an experiment, we present estimates of the sensitivity required to detect a signal corresponding to a relative strength down to 0.0001 and a range from 10 to 106 m. We show that these estimates fall within the limits of currently or soon to be available high-precision-measurement technology.
