Abstract

Immigrant and refugee students, including those who are undocumented immigrants, face significant barriers to college access and entry into the workforce. The cost of college alone, combined with the lack of access to financial aid for undocumented students, may discourage immigrant and refugee students from applying to college. Additionally, barriers such as lack of educator knowledge and support, low expectations, and placement in remedial tracks may prevent immigrant and refugee students from successfully gaining entry to desired postsecondary opportunities. Despite these challenges, immigrant and refugee students demonstrate strengths and perseverance and attribute support from educators, family members, and community organizations in achieving success. Moreover, school psychologists and school counselors can play a significant role in the college and career readiness (CCR) of immigrant and refugee students. CCR involves understanding available opportunities beyond the secondary level, which, for these students, involves navigating unique issues (e.g., legal issues, tuition policies, state laws, college/university climate, career opportunities). This chapter will examine the challenges immigrant and refugee students face in accessing postsecondary opportunities and supports that facilitate CCR. Additionally, this chapter will discuss the critical role school psychologists and school counselors play in preparing these students for college and the workforce. Recommendations for research, practice, and policy will also be provided.
