Abstract

A cost function is presented that characterizes how well two or more object classes are separated for classification purposes. This cost, the Hotelling trace criterion (HTC), can be used as a measure of performance of an imaging system. As an example, the HTC is applied to the aperture design of a coded-aperture system useful in nuclear medicine.
