Abstract
Neurenteric cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis of posterior mediastinal masses. The association of a posterior mediastinal mass with vertebral anomalies is a reliable diagnostic sign of neurenteric cysts and is necessary for a definitive pathologic diagnosis, since they are histologically indistinguishable from other mediastinal enteric cysts. A brief embryologic discussion of the neurenteric canal is presented.
