Abstract

The extraction of gold from chloride solutions by ion exchange is examined. It is shown that at initial gold concentrations between 1-5 ppm, 20 g/l Cl- and pH 5, the kinetics of loading on weak base resins are slightly slower than those observed with activated charcoal. Equilibrium loading of auric chloride varies considerably as a function of pH from one resin to another. For all of the resins studied, nearly complete gold extraction was achieved between pH 2 and pH 6.5. Sodium hypochlorite was found to exhibit a slight effect on the equilibrium loading of gold chloride.
