Abstract
This chapter is based on a transcript of a conversation between Noam Chomsky and the editors. It explores the early years of contemporary linguistics, detailing the transition from a behavioral to a cognitive view of language, and explaining the basic premises of Universal Grammar (UG) and the biolinguistics approach to language. The final portion of the chapter is dedicated to an account of the history of publishing in linguistics from 1960s onwards, as well as reflections on the nature of work and key questions in the field.
