N2 - We have developed a microfluidic device for rapid explicit diagnosis (μREx Dx) to address the presently unmet need for speedy, accurate diagnosis of cardiovascular infections. In order to decrease morbidity and mortality for patients with infective endocarditis (IE), μREx Dx rapidly provides clinically useful diagnostic information to facilitate the early use of appropriate therapy. Specifically, the total bacterial load of the sample is determined by 16s rDNA amplification, with the option for off-device sequencing, and the presence of plasmid-mediated antibiotic resistance gene, vanA, is detected. This system can have a major impact on molecular diagnosis of cardiovascular infection.
